Whatever happened to home birthday parties?

Really, it seems like you don't just do a simple birthday party at home anymore. The kids have to go somewhere, do an activity, something specific, generic, dedicated to the theme provided and just pizza for the meal. Why aren't home birthday parties done as much anymore? Do we as parents lack the resolve or do we all feel that if we do a party at home our kid is going to be the "loser?" I don't like doing parties that cost me $$$ to just book the place, have to fit it into a specific time, use their party supplies and do just what they want us to do. It cramps my style, man.

I was finishing up Seraphina's 5th birthday party invitations and trying to find some fun and cheap activities for the kids to do, especially outside. We are totally going chalk on the fence, photo-booth setup, and probably a scavenger hunt we can set up in the house when they are done running around outside. Cupcakes, present opening and playing with the new toys, a slideshow of the birthday girl for the tv and done. Why does it seem that hard?
